Hier hilft dem Dummen die Dummheit allein!

April 5, 2019 ~ Walter Shandy ~ Leave a comment

A meditation on some colleagues – from Richard Wagner’s Siegfried (Act 1, ~line 900):

Hier hilft kein Kluger,
das seh’ ich klar;
hier hilft dem Dummen
die Dummheit allein!

Here no sensibleness helps,
that I see clearly;
Here what helps the idiot
is idiocy alone

“It will be seen that this mere painstaking burrower and grub-worm of a poor devil of a Sub-Sub appears to have gone through the long Vaticans and street-stalls of the earth, picking up whatever random curiosities he could anyways find in any book whatsoever, sacred or profane” – prologue to Moby Dick
